Auditions for the 2014-2015 season of the New Bedford Symphony Youth Orchestras will be held on Saturday, September 6 (morning & afternoon) and Sunday, September 7 (afternoon only) at UMass Dartmouth (College of Visual & Performing Arts) (directions).

We will do our best to accommodate your request. All NBSYO musicians must be members in good standing in their school instrumental music programs.
- Students auditioning should prepare a solo piece that demonstrates both technical proficiency and expressive playing.
- Scale requirements for each ensemble are listed below.
- All auditions will include a short sight reading piece.

Strings: C, G, D, A, E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab (3 octaves)
Woodwinds & Brass: C, G, D, A, E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab (2 octaves where possible)
Mallet Percussion: C, G, D, A, E, F, Bb, Eb, Ab (1 or 2 octaves, with arpeggios)
Chromatic Scale (ascending and descending)
Percussion: The 26 standard snare drum rudiments.
Basic auxiliary percussion playing techniques (crash cymbals, triangle, tambourine)
Suggested String Audition Pieces: any solo from Suzuki Book 5 or 6 (all strings)
Violin: concertos by Haydn, Accolay, Rode, Beriot, Airs by Dancla
Viola: concertos by Telemann
Cello: Solo Suite No. 1 in G by Bach, Sonatas in C and G by Rombert, Concerto No. 4 by Golterman, Sonata in D by Telemann, Six Sonatas by Vivaldi
Bass: Marcello Sonata in G Minor, last movement
Demonstrate ability to sound expressive, use all parts of the bow and play with correct style. Students at this level are usually studying etudes including the violin and viola exercises by Kayser and Mazas.
Strings: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb (2 octaves)
Woodwinds & Brass: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb (1 octave)
Suggested String Pieces: any solo from Suzuki book 4 or 5 (all strings)
Vibrato required only for solo piece. Demonstrate ability to play with good quality sound and intonation and be able to shift to 3rd position.
Strings: D, G, C (1 octave)
Woodwinds & Brass: C Instruments - Bb (1 octave) / Bb Instruments - C (1 octave)
F Instruments - C or F (1 octave)
Suggested String Pieces: any solo from Suzuki book 2 or 3 (all strings)
Demonstrate good quality of sound knowledge of first position and ability to play with 2 and 4 note slurs.
All auditionees will be notified of their acceptance, by e-mail, within 4 days following the last audition date.
